"Talent is to finish whatever you start. And show it off!"--the comics teacher said. Then he gave us a script and told us to draw a comic from it. Which I didn't have the time to finish because of... life reasons.
But now, so many years later, I finally present you the fruits of my talent! At long last, my homework is finished and my assignment is shown to the world.
That said... when I found my study notes folder and saw my half-finished homework, I didn't like what I saw. I knew I could do better. In particular, the character design was quite wrong. I had tried at the time, but my choices of clothes and hairstyle were more based on stereotypes than on actual facts. I also knew that the scene and page flow could be better. So I did proper research, learned what the historical context of the script was, found how people actually dressed in the Ming dinasty times, made a lot of studies and tests, and drew everything again.
I also inked digitally. In my first attempt I had done as much as inking one page, by hand, with markers and brush, on tracing paper. It took me such a long time! But on this second attempt, I realised I wanted to block off large parts of the paper in black, as the story happens in a small village at night. Going digital allowed me to be playful with white lines on black that would have required white gouache or masking. I don't quite think I have the time for that (even more so if I mess up and have to start again!).
So this is a hybrid comic, for the first time for me. I had made them all 'analogic' before. It was also the time I learned to use Procreate. It is a fabulous program and it allowed me to draw and ink SO quickly. But it is not a full solution for comics. In that way, the rest of the process is hybrid too, as I exported the pages from Procreate into GIMP, set up the lettering there and exported them to Scribus for the PDF creation.
I am not particularly taken by the script, which I find it's full of plot holes. I tried to gently change things where I could, but I didn't want to change everything because I wanted to keep as close to the 'brief' as possible.
And I think there's a lot of points in the process where I could simplify things for myself in the future, but for now, here is it. At last! It's finished. I'm very happy with some panels. Hopefully you enjoy them too!

"El talento es acabar lo que empiezas. ¡Y enseñarlo!"--dijo el profesor de cómics. Y entonces nos dio un guión y nos dijo que dibujáramos un cómic a partir de ahí. Que no acabé, porque... razones de la vida.
Pero ahora, todos estos años después, al fin puedo presentar los frutos de mi esfuerzo. Mis deberes están terminados y puedo mostrar mi tarea a todo el mundo.
Aunque... cuando encontré mi carpeta de apuntes y vi los deberes a medio acabar, no me gustó lo que vi. Supe que podía hacerlo mejor. En concreto, el diseño de personajes estaba bastante mal. Lo hice lo mejor que pude en su momento, pero mis decisiones respecto a los estilos de vestuario y peluquería estaban basados más en estereotipos que en hechos reales. También era obvio para mi que el flujo de escenas y páginas era mejorable. Así que me documenté, aprendí acerca del contexto histórico del guión, encontré cómo se vestían y peinaban en la época de la dinastía Ming, hice un montón de estudios y pruebas, y lo dibujé todo de nuevo.
También entinté digitalmente. En mi primer intento había entintado una página, a mano, con rotuladores y pincel, en papel vegetal. ¡Me tomó tantísimo tiempo! En este segundo intento, se me ocurrió manchar de negro muchas partes de la página, ya que la historia ocurre en una aldea de noche. Hacerlo digitalmente me permitió jugar con líneas blancas sobre negro que de otra manera habrían requerido usar témpera blanca o máscaras. No me veo con el tiempo para hacerlo de esa forma (y aún menos si meto la pata y tengo que empezar de nuevo).
Así que este es un cómic híbrido, por primera vez para mí. Hasta entonces los había hecho todos 'analógicos'. También ha sido la vez en que he aprendido a usar Procreate. Es un programa fabuloso y me ha permitido dibujar y entintar SÚPER rápido. Pero no es una solución integral para cómics. De esta forma, el resto del proceso es híbrido también, ya que exporté las páginas de Procreate a GIMP, rotulé allí y exporté el resultado a Scribus para generar el PDF.
No soy una gran fan del guión, que personalmente creo que está lleno de agujeros. He tratado de cambiar cositas donde he podido, pero no quería cambiarlo todo, porque quería mantenerme tan fiel al 'encargo' como fuera posible.
También creo que hay muchos aspectos del proceso donde podría simplificar cosas en el futuro, pero por ahora, aquí está. ¡Al fin! Está acabado. Estoy muy contenta con algunas viñetas. ¡Espero que las disfrutes también!
